Drafting

Ferrith ChatFor membersFor authorsFor adminsVerified 2 Oct 2026

Drafting produces a document from your workspace's library of building blocks: the clauses and paragraphs your firm already uses, each knowing the questions it needs answered. Choose the blocks, or describe the document and let the AI propose them, answer the questions once, and the document is assembled, numbered and cross-referenced, ready to export as Word or PDF. The words come from your library. No model writes your document's text.

Drafting is part of the Professional and Automation plans; producing documents through the programmable API needs Automation. Any member can produce a document from the document types and templates they may use; maintaining the library needs the author documents grant (admins have it automatically).

What the library holds

  • Fields — the questions a document asks (a name, a date, an amount, a yes / no, a choice, a person, a picture), each defined once and used by any number of blocks. A field can carry a workspace default, your firm's address, a standard notice period, so a change there reaches every document produced from then on.
  • Building blocks — a clause or a paragraph with merge fields, conditions and repeats. A block says which document types it belongs to and where it sits in each, what it requires and conflicts with, and when it applies.
  • Document types — a will, a lease, an engagement letter: the sections, the clause numbering, the blocks every document of the type includes, and who may review one.
  • Templates — a fixed recipe of blocks for a type, for the documents you produce the same way every time.

Three ways to start a document

On the Drafting page, New draft offers:

Way When to use it What happens
Use a template The document is one your firm produces the same way every time The blocks are fixed by the template; you go straight to the questions
Ask the AI You can describe the document in a few sentences The AI proposes the blocks from the library and reads the facts you stated into the form; you check its plan before continuing
Build it myself You know which clauses you want Pick the document type and tick the blocks yourself

Whichever way you start, the plan is yours from then on: every block can be ticked or unticked, and the library's rules close the plan the same way (a required block comes in, two that conflict stop it).

Where things are

  • Drafting (in the navigation) lists the drafts you own under Mine and the ones shared with you under Shared with me. Admins also see API, the documents your own systems produced through the API. A draft moves through four stages: Planning, Collecting (answering the form), Assembled, and Reviewed.
  • Drafting library (the button on the Drafting page, for document authors and admins) is where fields, blocks, document types, templates and selection tests are maintained.

What the AI does, and does not do

When you ask the AI to plan a document, it reads the document type's catalogue of block descriptions and use when notes, never a block's text, and proposes blocks with a reason for each. It never writes your document's text, and nothing it proposes takes effect until you continue. It runs on your workspace's own model infrastructure; a brief is never sent to a third party.

Next: produce a document, or, for document authors, the library.
