Pictures and dates on document templates

A small update to the API and document drafting. Document templates now take pictures, and a single date format is now accepted.

What's new

  • API. An image field on a document template now takes a picture in the request, with the rest of the answers, as a base64 string, with or without a data: prefix: PNG or JPEG, up to 1 MB and 2,000 pixels on each side. A picture that doesn't fit is refused with its field named, like any other answer. Leave it out and the workspace's picture prints, if the field has one. A picture your workspace sets for every document, such as a letterhead logo, still can't be replaced. See document templates.

Changes to be aware of

  • API. Dates sent to a document template are now read one way: yyyy-MM-dd, a date-time, or a date with the month written as a word. Any other numeric date is now refused with a message saying why, rather than read month-first: 07/10/2026 is 7 October in some systems and 10 July in others. Convert your system's dates before you send them.
  • API. A template's input schema now describes an image field as a base64 string, and a request to produce a document can be up to 10 MB.
  • Ferrith Chat. The same reading applies across document drafting: a workflow's draft step given a date that could mean two different days now stops and names the field, rather than print the wrong day.

Fixed

  • A date-time sent to a document template now keeps the day it was written for. Its time zone could move it by a day.

Document drafting, model controls and starter templates

Our biggest update since launch brings document drafting to Ferrith Chat: documents assembled from your own library of clauses, by hand, from a template or from a brief. Admins also gain control over which models each area of the workspace uses, and there are example libraries to start from.

What's new

Document drafting

Produce a document from your workspace's library of building blocks: the clauses and paragraphs your firm already uses, each knowing the questions it needs answered. The words always come from your library. The AI can choose blocks and read facts from a brief, but it never writes your document's text. See Drafting.

  • Three ways to start. Use a template your firm has fixed, build the document yourself by ticking the blocks, or Ask the AI: describe the document in a few sentences and it proposes the blocks, with a reason for each, and fills in the facts it can quote from your brief. Nothing takes effect until you continue, and Ask about this plan suggests anything you might have missed. The AI runs on your workspace's own model infrastructure; a brief is never sent to a third party.
  • Answer once. One form asks every question the document needs, with your firm's standard answers already filled in. Answers save as you type, and a history shows every change.
  • Assembled for you. Clauses, schedules and parts are numbered, sub-paragraphs can follow legal numbering (3.3.1, then (a)), and cross-references stay right when clauses move. Section headings can carry their numbers ("3. Letting and rent") at the size you choose. A document can carry a header and footer with page numbers, your logo, a cover on a page of its own, and schedules that each start a new page.
  • Review and share. Mark a document reviewed, or ask the document type's named reviewers through their inbox; a document type can require a review before export. Drafts are private until you share them with the workspace or with chosen people and roles.
  • Export to Word, PDF or Markdown, or save the Word document straight to your documents, ready to attach to a conversation.
  • For document authors. Members with the new author documents permission, and admins, maintain the library: questions with your firm's defaults, building blocks with conditions and repeats, document types, templates, and tests that measure how well the AI picks blocks. Write a block with forms or in an editor that checks it as you type and previews it with sample answers, and ask the AI to improve a clause's wording. The block language reference covers everything a block can do.
  • Move a library between workspaces. Export a document type with everything it uses and import it into another workspace, or build a library file yourself from the published format.

Also new

  • Ferrith Chat. On the workspace details page, admins choose for each area (chat, agents, workflows, analysis grids, drafting and the API) which models members may use, the default, and whether members can change it. The chat page's model picker, the agent, workflow and grid screens and the API all follow it, and where an area allows a choice, agent authors can pick an agent's model again. The page itself is reorganised into clearer sections.
  • Ferrith Chat. A workflow can now produce a document from a drafting template: a draft step takes its answers from the step before, with no AI involved, and still waits for a review when the template asks for one.
  • Starter templates. Four example drafting libraries, a feature tour, a will, a non-disclosure agreement and a commercial lease, to download from Starter templates and import into your workspace. Each is marked as an example and is not suitable for real-world use.
  • API. Produce documents from your drafting templates: list the templates a key may use, read one's questions, and post the answers to receive the document as Word and PDF in a single call. Two new key scopes cover it; see document templates. Admins can also limit which models API keys may use.
  • Plans. Document drafting is part of the Professional and Automation plans, and the document templates API is part of Automation. Current inclusions are on the pricing page.

Changes to be aware of

  • Word documents you download, whether chat answers, workflow outputs or drafts, are now A4 pages with 2 cm margins, matching the PDFs. Until now Word chose its own page size, often US Letter.
  • Headings in PDF and Word downloads now look the same in both: one set of sizes, in black. Headings in PDFs are smaller than before, and in Word they are no longer blue.
  • Our support and sales mailboxes are now support@ferrith.com and sales@ferrith.com.

Fixed

  • Text typed or pasted into a code editor, such as a workflow's YAML, in the moment before saving is now always saved.
  • A heading that starts with a number, such as "1. Introduction", now keeps its number as written in Word downloads, as it does in PDFs, rather than Word renumbering it.

Security enhancements and portal text changes

A small update. Most of it is security improvements across Ferrith Chat and the account portal, plus a better-informed help assistant.

What's new

  • Ferrith Chat. Signing in now takes you back to the page you were heading for, and only ever to a page inside Ferrith Chat.
  • Ferrith Chat. The ? help assistant now works from what's actually on your screen. On the workflow builder it reads the whole workflow you're editing rather than a summary; in chat it sees the models, agents and workflows on offer and what you've attached; and every page, runs, analysis grids, users, API keys and workspace details included, now gives it context. It only names models, agents, workflows or documents it has been given, and otherwise tells you where to find the list. The panel header says what it can see on the current page.
  • Ferrith Chat. Admins can now delete a finished workflow run from its page. The documents uploaded for that run are removed with it, unless another run still uses them, in which case they are kept and the confirmation says so. On the Documents page, workflow inputs now show how many runs used them, and a document that can't be deleted says which runs to delete first.
  • Account portal. If the portal can't confirm your role in the workspace (potentially due to a connection issue), plan and billing changes are paused and noted on the page. Other functionality, like password reset, is still available.
  • Sign-up site. Clearer wording across get.ferrith.ai.

Fixed

  • The ? help assistant now answers on every page in Ferrith Chat, including a page you open directly in a new tab.
  • Deleting a workspace now removes its pending invitations along with everything else, and an invitation to a workspace that no longer exists can no longer be accepted.

Ferrith at launch

The first public release of the Ferrith platform: Ferrith Chat (your workspace), the account portal, and the API. This note describes the platform as it launches. From here, every change will be its own dated note, and you can follow them in the feed.

Ferrith Chat

  • Chat with your documents. Attach files (PDF, Word, Markdown, plain text) or a whole folder of files to a conversation. Answers cite their sources, and a citation opens the document at the cited page with the passage highlighted. Download any answer as a PDF or Word document.
  • Agents. Give a recurring job a name: an agent carries its own instructions and its own knowledge base of documents, and greets people with what it needs. Worker agents power workflows.
  • Workflows. Chain agents into multi-step processes with a form-based builder or YAML, or alternatively describe what you want and let the workspace draft the workflow for you. Add human review steps (approve, edit a single field, or reject with a comment); the run records who decided what and shows exactly what a reviewer changed. Follow runs live step by step, and finish with a rendered PDF or Word output.
  • Notifications. The bell shows what needs you. A review request names who started the run and whether someone has already acted on it; filter by workflow, date, or status, and clear notifications you are done with without losing them.
  • Analysis grids. Rows are documents, columns are your questions. Each cell is answered from the whole document with page-referenced evidence, and the grid exports to CSV. Save a grid's questions as a reusable template. A simpler and more robust way of asking questions across a large folder of documents. You can even chat against the results for more insights. Included on the Professional and Automation plans.
  • Bundles. Export a workflow, agent, or grid template as a bundle and import it into another workspace. Everything arrives as drafts, and nothing personal is included. See importing and exporting bundles.
  • Workspace administration. Add and remove members and set their scope (admin, agent/workflow authors); Add multiple members to roles to restrict folders/documents, workflows, reviews, agents and analysis grids to specific teams; folder-level read and edit access; restrictable agents, workflows, and grids; a storage view with a recycle bin; a view of the documents your integrations upload and the runs that used them; and a complete workspace export for the Owner.
  • Your key, if you want it. Every workspace's content is encrypted at rest. Workspaces on the BYOK arrangement bind their encryption to a key vault they control, revoke the grant and the workspace is unavailable to everyone, Ferrith included. Ask us about BYOK.
  • Private Models. Models you chat against, or use for workflows, agents and grids are hosted directly by Ferrith. No content ever leaves the Ferrith platform, is never sent to 3rd party AI providers, is never logged and is never used for model training.
  • Help where you are. The ? assistant answers questions about the screen you're on and has the full context of what your looking at.

Account portal

  • See and change your subscription, add seats, agent packs, and storage as you grow, and download invoices.
  • Upgrades apply straight away; reductions apply at renewal. Cancelling shows you exactly when access ends and what happens to your data, and you can re-subscribe from the same page.
  • The plans build on each other: analysis grids from Professional; workflows and the API on Automation. Current inclusions and prices are visible on the pricing page.

API

  • Workspace API keys carry scopes, and a key can be limited to particular workflows allowing you to control what a specific key can do.
  • Start workflow runs, follow them on a live event stream, upload input documents, and download rendered outputs.
  • An OpenAI-compatible chat endpoint is available.
  • The getting-started guide walks through your first call, and the interactive reference lets you try every endpoint with your own key.
